Cowes Week App - Privacy Policy

For all users

  1. We collect data about the pages you visit within the app, to help us determine what content is most popular with our audience. The data collected does not personally identify you to us and is completely anonymous.

  2. The Cowes Week app ("app") is designed to support the distribution of information to you and to assist Cowes Week Limited ("CWL") in its management of the racing programme.
  3. Some of the information included in the app is provided by third parties. In particular, details of shore-side events are provided by the venues. CWL is not responsible for the accuracy of the information provided or failure of a venue to provide the listed entertainment.
  4. In using the app, you recognise that there influences outside of CWL's control that may impact on the successful operation and your enjoyment of the app, including failure of your device and/or battery and availability of mobile communications in your location. CWL cannot therefore guarantee that the information included in the app is always correct and up to date.
  5. The safety and security of your device is your responsibility. You should take all appropriate measures to protect your device from the conditions you will experience, including splashes, rain, bumps, knocks and drops. CWL cannot accept liability for any loss or damage to the device as a result of your use of the service, however caused.

For competitors

  1. When you register to use the app as a competitor, we will ask you for your name and email address so that we can quickly contact you if we need to alert you to any issues with the app. This data is stored securely on our servers and will only be used by CWL to contact you in connection with your use of the app and your participation in the event.
  2. While you are using the app, it will periodically collect location data in the background along with a unique id from your device to allow your boat to be tracked in accordance with the Sailing Instructions for the event. This data is only made available to the race management team so that they can monitor the progress of each class on their respective racetrack and take appropriate action to shorten course if weather conditions and progress dictate. Your tracking data will not be made publicly available.
  3. The data collected does not personally identify you to the race management team. The data from all of the devices onboard are amalgamated into a single track of your boat and it is not possible for anyone on the race management team to determine any personal information about you specifically. The data collected about the boat's track during a race is retained on our servers as a historic record of the races at the event. Any data collected prior to or after the event (e.g. as a result of you testing the app) is deleted.

  4. Use of the app is governed by the Sailing Instructions for the event. In the event of failure or incorrect data, recourse to redress is limited by the terms of those Instructions. No additional responsibility for actions taken by you, your crew or a third party as a result of information included in the app will be accepted by CWL.
  5. CWL cannot guarantee that the information included in the app is always correct and up to date. If you are in any doubt in this respect, you should seek alternative official sources of information as described in the Sailing Instructions (e.g. VHF radio and text messaging).
